Different ways to say “to pay” in Vietnamese and how to properly use them

1. Tính tiền!

Say this when you want to ask for the check at a restaurant or check out at a store.

2. Thanh toán (formal)

This phrase is mostly used by staff at hotels or banks where they have to be polite and professional.

•  Chị muốn thanh toán thế nào? = How do you want to pay?

•  Chị thanh toán bằng tiền mặt được không? = Can you pay in cash?

3. Trả tiền (informal)

This phrase is more casual/ conversational.

•  Để em trả tiền. = Let me pay.

•  Anh trả tiền chưa? = Have you paid?
